Apr. 28th, 2020 05:10 amtalked about such cool fandom things with Elli, i want to keep a record, i think.
• the way fanvids just... died. it's really sad, i love fanvids when they were present in every fandom i was in — definitely from 2008 to... maybe 2012? not sure then. i'm sure they were still alive even later, just that i started getting into stuff where fanvids in their classical form weren't possible. it's interesting, not that i'm in kpop, people are still making fmvs but they are not... fanvids. they are like people are inventing vidding from scratch, as if there were not a long culture of vidding existing online! it's fascinating (and sad). most of the "edits" on twitter and "fmvs" on youtube just straight up not care about matching the editing to the music rhythm, and most of the times lyrics match what's happening on the screen, it's very blunt and in your face. Elli actually has much more... refined? tastes than me, and is way more choosy about fanvids, although we agreed that "love is like a bottle of gin" (by lim) is maybe the pinnacle of vidding. but there's a lot of vids i remember fondly to this day.
• similar thing happened to (photoshop) edits and graphics... idk, it's harder to say because maybe they're still more alive in fandoms i'm not in, but it's been really sad watching that culture die, considering i used to be part of it. again, if people try making such stuff, it always looks like they're inventing it from scratch instead of relying on a long legacy. on the other side, fanart has been blooming for almost ten years, and most of the people who are good at design in fandom nowadays are also good artists, so they just. draw. there are amazing works, don't get me wrong, but it's sad how graphics are just kinda gone. although the times when REALLY good graphics appear, they are usually very popular (and stolen with no regards to the author, ever, even more often than art — graphics are not considered something people put hard work into, very often).
